Gutters – not Urgent but Important

If you were to use Eisenhower’s Matrix to help prioritise preventative maintenance for investment properties, we believe cleaning the gutters of a property would make the top right hand corner quadrant under the “significant” banner.

Nothing screams “rental property” more than small shrubs growing out of the gutters on a roof. It’s unsightly, but more than that, blocked gutters can quickly cause a lot of damage to a property.

Clogged gutters rust out more quickly and cause rainwater to go where it is not supposed to, staining external paintwork, washing away gardens and even causing internal leaks.

This type of maintenance generally falls under the umbrella of property owner responsibilities. Of course, if the gutters are clogged by tennis balls or frisbees because the renter’s kids have managed to throw them onto the roof, this then becomes their responsibility.

We suggest gutters are checked and professionally cleaned at least once per year, rather than waiting until a problem occurs. Being proactive can really save you some dollars.

And this time of year is perfect in our area for having it done – before those large rain “events” start heading our way again.
